Post Mortem
Nov. 3rd, 2004 04:47 pmI failed the practical because:
1) I was concussed and confused
2) I blithely assumed that, like the previous practical, we would be asked to diagnose someone with a disease (not a trauma, like a torn ACL) so I studied the differential diagnoses for the diseases and bagged the pre- and postsurgical traumas until later. Wrong!
3) Because the professor didn't include the standard exam questions in her lecture notes ("where does it hurt, on a scale of 1-10 how much does it hurt, what makes it better and worse") or the special questions she wanted us to ask ("When was your last doctor's appointment, when is your next one, did the doctor do any tests on you, do you have the films?") I assumed we didn't need to ask them. Nope!
Armed with my nurse's note stating that I have a concussion, I negotiated for an extension on my exam (it will now occur on Monday and the practical will occur at a time TBD by the instructor and me). That means that all the stuff that was due Monday is still due, however. So I will be a busy puppy from now until then.
Fine. I will take my lumps (the on-the-head variety and the grade variety) and carry on. Thanks to all of you for your calls, emails, and supportive comments. I really appreciate it!
