I am now prepared for Halloween. More about the end result momentarily. To get that way, I headed for the super-humongo-megastore Wal-Mart, passing the equally superhuge megastore K-Mart on the way.

Hmm, K-Mart is having an up-to-50%-off sale, according to the several zillion signs outside. I'll try it.

The result: K-mart is nearly empty of people. It does have purple nylon costume bug wings ($3.88) but doesn't have bunny ears, or a long, fuzzy pink panther tail. In general, K-mart is.... empty, despite the several zillion sale signs outside. Hmm. As I leave, I overhear a young mother explaining to her small child that now they have to go to Wal-Mart.

In point of fact, I did too, since my original objective was pink bunny ears. Damn!

Walmart is packed. It has pink bunny ears ($2.88), but no pink panther tails. (Think about it: If I'm going to go anywhere dressed as a bunny rabbit, naturally I do not want a little pink cottontail stuck to the middle of my jeans-clad butt, which will seem... large... by comparison. Naturally, I want a long "pink panther" tail, which will draw the eye pleasingly downward, or which can be draped seductively over one forearm, and never mind that that combination of animal features is never found in nature. (Femininity is an imperfect art.)

Wal-Mart does, however, have sparkle glitter cat ear-and-tail sets ($3.14). That will have to do. The atmosphere inside (inside the Wal-Mart, that is, not inside the ears) is busy and happy.

Conclusions:

- The pink bunny ears are for teaching my spin class (where class participants have dubbed me the energizer bunny).

- The wings are for the Halloween Sunday cyclocross race. (It's a Velo Bella thing. You must wear wings or other costume items when you race at Halloween. One of my teammates raced last year in a gorilla suit, with a purple sparkly negligee over that. And, at $3.88, I'm not worried that I will endo and squash the oh-so-valuable wings. ;-)

- The sparkly black cat ears and tail are for the party later, of course.

- Last but not least, Wal-Mart is eating K-Mart's lunch. I am not entirely sure why.
