Adductors, hamstrings, and quads, oh my!

ninevirtuesSo, here we are at the hip. Let's take a quick tour of how exactly the muscles in your thigh work, and why.
Adductors: If I were to cut off someone's leg at mid-thigh and show it to you, you would see that the middle 1/3 of muscle mass in the leg is adductor. (Groin muscle.) And there are many of them. (Adductor magnus, adductor longus, adductor brevis, gracilis, and sartorius spring to mind.)
Okay, with THAT many adductors, comprising THAT much muscle mass, they must be doing SOMEthing. Trouble is, we're not sure what, exactly. We know they play a small role in gait and in knee stabilization, and they help with pelvic stabilization. But that's all we know.
(More about that pelvic stabilization: Well, your glutes and lats form a big "X" on the back of your body, to crossbrace your trunk. Your internal obliques and adductors form a big X on the front of your body, to crossbrace the front of your trunk. Cool, eh?)
In any case, if you look at a detailed drawing of the adductors, you can see that they all look slightly different. Okay, now take the anatomy picture... flex the knee and hip, and adduct the leg, and its adductors, past the midline.
Hey, look! Some of those adductors have a PERFECT line-of-force when the leg is adducted past the midline. Other ones have a much better line of force at different angles. Hmm.
Eh, now I'm tired. I'll post about quads and hamstrings later, maybe. The infamous Friday orthopedics quiz is tomorrow.
