Return of the TMJ
Aug. 31st, 2004 05:56 pmSo today's lab included manual mobilizations. If you've been playing along, you recall that the TMJ is the jaw joint, so that means that yes, we had to put our hands in each others' mouths.
Break out the latex gloves....
Mobilization 1: Loosen the medial pterygoid muscle inside the jaw/mouth. (Glove goes on the right hand to loosen the left pterygoid. Left hand goes on the person's forehead. Right hand thumb goes inside the mouth and rests on the offending medial pterygoid. Right hand fingers go outside the cheek. Gently press them together. That's right, we administered the mother of all cheek pinches today.
Strangely, if you had a sore jaw, it felt kind of good to have this done to you.
Mobilization 2: Move the jaw inferiorly (toward the person's feet) and posteriorly (toward the back of their head) about 1 mm each. Done right, this is a tiny motion, and the only way you can tell you are having any effect is to feel the TMJ on the non-affected side to notice it is moving.
This translates to:
Lab Partner: "How's that feel?"
Me: "Mrph! Eff herz!"
LP: "Oh, am I pressing too hard?"
Me: "Yefff!"
