Dear Dad,

I'm growing tomatoes in the tiny back yard of my very own house this year.
They taste just like the tomatoes you used to grow at our old house-- I remember you fussing over them, and I remember how many tomatoes we had, and how good they tasted.

The Romas I'm growing are fine, but some of the Early Girls have black spots on the bottom.
What the heck is that, and how can I fix it?

Love,

Gail

It might be blossom rot, in which case they just need some basic tomato food (the only chemical fertilizer I ever use, because I NEED MY TOMATOES).

The black spots are blossom end rot. I've gotten that this year too.

I hear a rumor that blossom end rot happens when the tomatoes are watered unevenly. I've had trouble with that this year due to the random heat waves and not paying enough attention to my irrigation.

My dad says that when the bottom of the tomato gets rotten its because of foggy and dewy mornings. That the water runs down and collects. Your mileage may vary.
