When I got up this morning and casually checked my training schedule, it said, "ACE Speedway Crit Day. YOU WILL STICK WITH THE PACK. YOU WILL SPRINT."
Dang, I forgot it was an ACE day, and my legs still hurt from Sunday. Nevertheless, I guess that means my day is planned. ;-)
Executive Summary: I followed instructions well. Goal achieved.
More: We seemed to have better competition this time-- three guys from TriCyclist showed up. Aha, that means I know exactly how this is going to go, providing someone has explained the facts of life to them. There was one clif bar teenager (They usually know what they are doing), a couple other guys from various teams, one other woman in a Primal Wear jersey (ie pretty jersey, but she was not on a team) and some unattached riders.
We started off and it seemed pretty civilized. There were a couple of attacks, but I jumped on Mr. Clif Bar's wheel and stayed there. He always seemed to be in the right place at the right time; when he ended up at the back, he always seemed to find a good path to the front again. I rode his wheel for quite some time, then found myself behind him trying to bridge up to a breakaway. (He wanted me to pull. No way dude. Let me achieve my main objective here, which is to finish with the pack, then maybe we can discuss me pulling next time.)
Ten minutes in. Not very painful so far.
When they called a prime, people sprinted and I stuck. Hooray! Right about then, Mr. Clif Bar got shelled, so I started hunting for another wheel to follow. (I'm a girl. When I race with guys, I make them pull.) With ten to go, an unattached guy right in front of me crashed. I dodged him. Whew! He didn't take anyone else out with him. I am very happy my reflexes were good.
Twenty minutes in. Still not especially painful.
With six to go, the pack started thinking about sprinting. With about three to go, the TriCyclist guys made their move and one guy got away while the other two fouled things up at the front (ie they went a little slower, so their teammate could get away, and none of us caught them doing it in time). Okay, so someone HAS explained the birds and bees to them.
Then a Doughnut Boy (really, that's what their team is named) tried to tangle with them, and one of them had to educate the other one on how to play two-on-one. ("No! Don't work with him! Let him chase me, then when I sit up, you attack and make him chase you, then when you're done, I attack and make him chase me. Got it?") Whoops, I guess their mama was a little remiss in that part of their education, but once they caught on, they managed to work over Mr. Doughnut Boy pretty thoroughly.
Then there was a sprint. I started my sprint from halfway around the track (more or less when other people did). Of the 13 people remaining in contention, I sprinted and got 10th. Not so bad. Hey, I top tenned! Not bad at all. I gave a cute little girly squeak when someone told me I did that. :-)
So yeah, I stuck with the pack, and yeah I sprinted. If you've been following along, you know that the first time I raced at ACE, I got dropped and lapped twice. Last time, I got dropped twice, lapped once. This time I was not dropped. Arrr. Go girly!
