Bye, bye, Bikey....
Jun. 23rd, 2005 02:25 pmMore in the ongoing saga of the stolen road racing bike, and the replacement thereof...
The frame is a 2003 Orbea Mitis. It has arrived at the bike shop, and is sitting there, waiting to be built.
My teammate, hearing my plea for parts, showed up at the local training race with a very nice Deda seatpost, handlebars, and stem. (The team bikes came equipped with them, but a sponsorship from Thompson required the elite racers to use Thompson equipment instead.)
The wheels came from Joe. ("Here, I was using these on my track bike, but I don't need them. You have them.")
Last, but not least... to make the new bike happen, I had to make the hard choice: The pedals, seat, computer, bottom bracket, cranks are all coming off Bikey, the time-trial-bike-cum-rolling-piece-of-art.
I can build Bikey again later, when school is done-- but that decision is a tacit acknowledgement that my financial circumstances and my athletic focus have changed. Stripping the time trial bike means it's not easy to change back.
Last but not least, I'm still looking for a 1 1/8" threadless headset and a pair of 9-speed shifter/brake levers. (The shifter/brake levers apparently retail for close to $300. Ouch! I'll be trying a variety of ways to acquire some for less than that.)
