I remember overhearing a very funny conversation where someone mentioned the species of plant called marsh mallow (Althaea officinalis) and the other person was absolutely convinced that the first person was putting her on -- she wouldn't believe it was a real plant, even when I jumped in and confirmed it. (It produces a gooey juice that was used in making historical versions of this confection. ;)
