Finickynarcane's art show
Aug. 12th, 2004 07:23 amI stopped by to see user finickynarcane's solo show. The four larger stone sculptures in the center of the room really seemed to command the room and set the tone for the show.
On a technical level-- not that I know squat about carving stone, mind you-- I thought the carving was interesting... several times I wondered how S. physically managed to carve the intricate and complex detail I saw... she didn't ignore the color and grain of the stone, nor did she just incorporate it-- it seemed to be an integral part of the art.
On an artistic level-- and again, I am wholly unqualified to be an art critic-- I saw that the pieces seemed to move on their own, as though polished stone had suddenly decided to climb down from its base, leap off the base in a complex, swirling spiral, or strike a pose to show off.
I have only one quibble: "My Descent Into Despair" is a complex, intricate swirl of pink stone that rests on a pole attached to its base. I think it is not going DOWN. I think it goes UP, it's an expression of artistic brio and confidence in the future, and it needs an entirely different name. But hey, I'm not the artist. ;-)
S. has been carving stone for a long time. It shows. After this paean to her stonecarving, though, S. will doubtless wonder what I thought of the welding on the walls. Well.... I thought the welding showed a certain rustic charm. I'm not personally a fan of rustic charm, but many people love it (and that's probably why many of the welding pieces have sold).
