I've been wishing I had a beater bike. I want to commute to work, and from there to the gym, and possibly from home to the grocery store, and under no circumstances will I park any of my nice racing bikes outside any of those places and leave them unattended.
Even with a lock. Even with multiple locks. No way.
So today, rolling back into the driveway after work, I saw before me.... a bike parked by the dumpster.
A MTB mixte', well festooned with dead weeds: purple paint, rusty saggy chain, missing seat, and a matched set of flat tires.
Mental calculation time:
Tubes $4 each plus a spare, call it $12
slickasaurus tires $20 each = $40 (might not need these, if current tires are OK)
White plastic basket with plastic flowers $5 (ebay)
Seat... use my spare, sitting in box in closet unused
After that rapid mental calculation, it took me 90 seconds to carry the abandoned bike into my house, parking it in the kitchen because I have no more rack space. (Stop laughing at me! There's a really good reason my house is called the Home for Wayward Bicycles.)
